Alexandra Schimmer is the Solicitor General of Ohio. As the state's chief appellate lawyer, she conducts and supervises the state’s appeals, both civil and criminal, in the United States Supreme Court, the Ohio Supreme Court, and the federal courts of appeals. She joined the Ohio Attorney General’s office in February 2009, as the Chief Deputy Solicitor General, and was previously a litigator with the Columbus office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP.

In addition to her litigation work, Schimmer is also involved in state and national law reform efforts and various pro bono activities. Since 2008, she has served as Ohio Commissioner on the Uniform Law Commission, which drafts uniform legislation designed to solve problems common to all the states. The Commission is responsible for such fundamentals of state law as the Uniform Commercial Code, the Uniform Arbitration Act, the Uniform Probate Code, and the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act. As part of this service, Schimmer served on the drafting committee for the Uniform Collateral Consequences of Conviction Act, which was promulgated to address the growing concerns about the impact of collateral consequences that flow from criminal convictions and the barriers they pose for successful offender reentry. In 2007, Schimmer was honored with the Columbus Bar Association’s award for outstanding pro bono service by an individual, for litigation work advancing the right to counsel in certain civil proceedings.

Schimmer received her J.D. from the Yale Law School, where she was a Coker Teaching Fellow and senior editor of the Yale Law Journal. She received her A.B. summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton University. Prior to law school, she was a Fulbright Fellow at Cambridge University in England, and following law school, served as a law clerk to the Honorable Sidney H. Stein of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the Honorable R. Guy Cole, Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
